The Bhutanese film industry, though still in its early stages, is creating waves with its unique storytelling and captivating visuals. In this article, we delve into the world of Bhutanese cinema, exploring its history, the cultural significance of its films, and some must-watch movies. Bhutan's entry into the world of cinema began in the late 1980s. with the government's aim to promote Bhutanese culture and values through film. The 1st 3  Bhutanese films are "Gasa Lamai Singye", “The cup” and the travels and the Magician 

Gasa Lamai Singye

Gasa lamai Singye movie is the first movie of the bhutan which was Produced in the year of 1989 by the director Ugyen Dorji.Gasa Lamai Singye is a love story of Singye and Galem. Story took place during the 18th century. Singye was serving as a civil servant and Galem was staying at home. Two of them were strongly connected to each other. One day Singye had to leave the place and had to go with lama (abbot of Gasa) to work for lama. Galem was left alone back at home and later it was known that she was pregnant. Later her news of getting pregnant was heard by her parents and she was sent out from the house. She had a tough time loitering around the places without proper food and clothing. Once she sat beside the river bank to see anyone heading to Gasa. Sometime later she sees someone going to Gasa. She then sings a song stating that she is suffering and if you are going Gasa please inform my Singye to come back to her. The man carries her message and informs Singye about Galem’s situation down in Punakha. Singye couldn’t bear the pain and he rushed towards Punakha. When Singye reaches Punakha he finds out that Galem is no more. He sees her dead body on fire in the cremation ground, Singye couldn’t bear the pain and jumped into the fire with Galam.

The cup

"The Cup" was the second movie of the bhutan which was produced in the year  1990 directed by Khyentse Norbu, this film is about two young novice monks who are sent to India to watch the World Cup soccer finals. The film offers a unique glimpse into Bhutanese culture and the role of religion in society.The director Khyentse Norbu is a Tibetan Lama who went to NYC film school, who wanted to make a movie, and I had become friendly with him. There was this charming story, which was a teaching for him but a story for everyone else, about little monks and the World Cup. It was shown in Director’s Fortnight at Cannes, and we brought a lot of the Tibetans to the screening, and it was well received and sold all over the world. It was a very happy story for everybody involved.

Travels and the Magician

"Trave and the Magician" was the  movie of the bhutan which was produced in the year  2003 directed by Khyentse Norbu. The two men embark on parallel, if separate, journeys. Their yearning is a common one--for a better and different life. Dondup, delayed by the timeless pace of his village, is forced to hitchhike through the beautiful wild countryside of Bhutan to reach his goal. He shares the road with a monk, an apple seller, a papermaker and his beautiful young daughter, Sonam. Throughout the journey, the perceptive yet mischievous monk relates the story of Tashi. It is a mystical fable of lust, jealousy and murder, that holds up a mirror to the restless Dondup, and his blossoming attraction to the innocent Sonam. The cataclysmic conclusion of the monk's tale leaves Dondup with a dilemma--is the grass really greener on the other side.

So therefore this is the first movie of Bhutan Which is based on a true story. From these movies you can understand the life of our great grandparents, as well as we can get a lot of knowledge about the past, as well as these movies have promoted our culture and tradition.  The movies were directed by great and knowledgeable directors Ugyen Dorji and Khyentse Norbu.
